Introduction to Afro Caribbean and Afro Latin American Religions in the Americas
This survey course will provide students an introduction to the diversity of African based religions in the Americas. Students will learn of the transformations that have occurred in the journey of the belief systems from West and Central Africa to the Caribbean, Central and Latin America. This course is a prerequisite to Sacred Art of West and Central Africa and Field Research in Afro Caribbean/Latino/a Religions in the Americas. (3 credits)

Sacred Art of West and Central Africa in the Caribbean and Latin America
Over more than four centuries (15th -19th centuries) of the Atlantic Slave Trade divers ethnic groups of West and Central Africa were brought to the Caribbean, Central, South and North Americas. With them came a sacred philosophy and ritual practices that recreated and transformed the religious artifacts that were used in their ancestral homes. The intricate symbols and sacred installations used to communicate with the divinities of Africa in the Americas has developed diverse art forms that have contributed a dynamic African influenced aesthetic sacred essence particular to African descendant communities in the Americas. (3 credits)

Field Research in Afro Caribbean/Latino/a Religions in the Americas
Pre requisite – Caribbean/Latin American Religions in the Americas or Introduction to Afro Caribbean and Afro Latin Religions in the Americas

The course is an in-depth research course focused on documenting the historical and present practices that continue to inform the vibrant sacred traditions in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latin America. The course will encourage developing scholars to research in the field, conducting in-depth interviews with expert practitioners and scholars who are authorities in the field. The intent is to have developing scholar’s research contemporary practices developing critical comparative analysis using existing scholarship. It is expected that students will have the opportunity to research and document traditions that are a vibrant part of Afro Latino/a and Caribbean cultures. (3 credits)

Students who are not enrolled in one of our graduate programs may audit these courses or enroll for credit under the category of Special Student. Special Students must have completed a Bachelors degree from an accredited university. Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe is accredited by the Middle States Comission on Higher Education and the Consejo de Educación Superior de Puerto Rico.
